Women and Girls in Nepal
“Empowering Women, Transforming Communities”
Women and girls are at the heart of Nepal’s social, cultural, and economic development. They contribute significantly to their families, communities, agriculture, education, entrepreneurship, and the nation’s progress. Over recent decades, Nepal has made important advances in promoting gender equality, increasing girls’ access to education, and enhancing women’s participation in leadership and public life.
Despite this progress, many women and girls—particularly those living in rural, remote, and marginalized communities—continue to face significant challenges. Deep-rooted social norms, gender discrimination, poverty, and unequal access to resources often limit their opportunities and participation in society.
Education
Education remains one of the most powerful tools for empowering women and breaking the cycle of poverty. However, many girls from low-income families continue to face barriers to completing their education. Financial hardship, household responsibilities, limited educational resources, and social expectations can increase the risk of school dropout, especially in rural areas.
Girls who are denied educational opportunities often have fewer choices for employment, leadership, and economic independence later in life. Ensuring equal access to quality education remains essential for achieving gender equality and sustainable development.
Economic Participation and Leadership
Women play a vital role in Nepal’s economy, particularly in agriculture, small businesses, and household management. However, they often have limited access to employment opportunities, vocational training, financial resources, property ownership, and leadership positions.
Women from disadvantaged communities, ethnic minorities, and rural areas face additional barriers to economic participation and decision-making. Expanding access to skills development, entrepreneurship, and leadership opportunities is critical for creating greater economic independence and social inclusion.
Child Marriage and Gender Inequality
Although child marriage rates have declined in recent years, early marriage continues to affect many girls in vulnerable communities. Child marriage can limit educational opportunities, increase health risks, and reduce a girl’s ability to make decisions about her future.
Gender inequality also affects access to resources, leadership roles, and opportunities for personal and professional growth. Empowering girls through education and awareness helps them build confidence, make informed choices, and achieve their full potential.
Menstrual Health and Dignity
Menstrual health remains a challenge for many adolescent girls. Lack of awareness, social stigma, inadequate sanitation facilities, and limited access to menstrual hygiene products can negatively impact girls’ health, confidence, and school attendance.
Although harmful practices related to menstruation have declined, misconceptions and discrimination still exist in some communities. Continued education and awareness are essential to ensure that girls can manage menstruation safely, confidently, and with dignity.
Gender-Based Violence and Human Trafficking
Gender-based violence remains a serious concern affecting women and girls across Nepal. Domestic violence, sexual abuse, harassment, exploitation, and human trafficking continue to impact the safety and wellbeing of many women and girls, particularly those living in poverty or social exclusion.
Women and girls often face barriers to reporting abuse due to fear, stigma, lack of support systems, and limited access to justice. Strengthening awareness, prevention programs, survivor support services, and community engagement is essential to creating safer communities for all.
Creating a Better Future
Despite these challenges, women and girls across Nepal continue to demonstrate remarkable resilience, courage, and leadership. They are increasingly becoming educators, entrepreneurs, professionals, community leaders, and advocates for change.
At RUWON Nepal, we believe that investing in women and girls is one of the most effective ways to build stronger families, more prosperous communities, and a more equitable society. Through education, digital skills training, leadership development, mentorship, advocacy, and empowerment programs, we work to ensure that every woman and girl has the opportunity to learn, lead, and thrive.
By empowering women and girls today, we are helping to create a more inclusive, just, and sustainable future for Nepal.
